Gowalla shut down just today March 11, 2012. Just three short months after it’s acquisition by Facebook, the company has officially closed it doors.
The video above is an example of how the platform works on your phone.
If you forgot to delete your account prior to the acquisition, fear not, the Facebook acquisition did not include all of the data the company has collected on your whereabouts over the years. Facebook has enough of that already.
For those of you who may not know just who or what Gowalla was, it was a location-based social network where users could check-in at various “Spots” around the world.
The Gowalla team has plans to join forces with Facebook, particularly focusing on the development of a Timeline per se’, even though the service itself is discontinued.
The company was headquartered in Texas, home to SXSW, which is being held this week. The event is synonymous with the launch and promotion of location based startups including Foursquare, Gowalla’s slightly uglier big brother and now the location space’s clear winner. If there’s money to be made in the check-in space, the ball is well and truly in Foursquare’s court.
The short history of a short lived company:
On December 2, 2010, Gowalla released version 3.0 for the iPhone 4, allowing Gowalla users to check in using Foursquare, Facebook Places, Twitter, and Tumblr, or view friends’ check-ins from other services.
In March 2011 an Android version of Gowalla was released. This allowed the same features that applied to the iPhone 4 to be used on Android phones; it also updated the interface dramatically to introduce a new “Passport” look.
In June 2011 a Windows Phone 7 version of Gowalla was released with a similar feature set.
The acquisition of Gowalla by Facebook was announced on December 2, 2011.
Gowalla was launched in 2009 and was backed by investors including Greylock Partners, Also p-Louie Partners, Founders Fund, and other prominent angel investors.
